Grotte de Covadonga (Santa Cueva)

Cangas de Onís

Dimensions
Grotto opening in the foothills of Mount Auseva, chapel suspended on the rock face
Period
Marian shrine; the name Cova Dominica is attested from long ago
What stands there
1 grotto-shrine, 1 neo-Romanesque basilica below

The name comes from the Latin Cova Dominica — the grotto of the Lady — and the place is dedicated to the cult of the Virgin, whose image is housed in the chapel fixed to the rock face. It is one of the most historically charged shrines in Spain, because national memory has layered onto the Marian cult the memory of a founding battle. The site today lies at the heart of the Picos de Europa national park.
