Entrusted to the Templars in 1178 by King Ferdinand II of León to protect pilgrims on an already-fortified site, this fortress was enlarged after the dissolution of the Order of the Temple in 1312 by the noble families who succeeded them. It traditionally marks the start of the last two hundred kilometres of the Camino Francés before Compostela.
