Built as a fortress-church in the heart of the historic centre, Porto Cathedral retains a strongly defensive Romanesque character despite its later Gothic and Baroque transformations. It stands on the route of the Caminho Português at the point where pilgrims leave the city to cross the Douro. It lies within the UNESCO World Heritage site "Historic Centre of Porto", inscribed in 1996.
