the only Portuguese Romanesque cathedral of the Reconquista to have survived almost intact
Built after the Battle of Ourique as part of the Christian reconquest, this fortified Romanesque former cathedral is one of the best-preserved medieval religious monuments in Portugal. It lies within the perimeter of the UNESCO World Heritage site "University of Coimbra – Alta and Sofia", inscribed in 2013. On the Caminho Português, it marks a major stage between Santarém and Porto.
