Built from the early 16th century until 1605
What stands there
raised to the rank of minor basilica in 1962, financed by the mariners' guild
This late Gothic church with Plateresque Renaissance decoration, marked by a Portuguese Manueline influence visible in its ornamental cresting, was financed largely by the Gremio de Mareantes, the powerful mariners' guild of Pontevedra, which paid for the work with baskets of fish levied on its catches. It stands at the end of the Avenida de Santa María, in the historic centre of Pontevedra, an important stage on the Caminho Português.
