Period

What stands there
episcopal seat of the diocese of Tui since the early Middle Ages

Built on a rocky promontory overlooking the river Minho, which marks the border with Portugal, this cathedral blends Romanesque and early Gothic in an ensemble of distinctly defensive appearance, with battlements and a fortified tower. Tui is the first Spanish stage of the Caminho Português after the crossing of the Minho from Valença, and its cathedral is the town's emblematic monument. The site had already seen earlier religious occupation, with an early Christian basilica of the 5th–6th centuries in the time of the Suebic kingdom.
