Igreja de Santa Iria
Santarém
Dimensions
Gothic rib vault, the only survival from before the rebuilding of 1668
Period
Probable medieval origin (12th century), Baroque rebuilding in 1668
What stands there
the town of Santarém is said to take its name from "Santa Iria"
This church in the Ribeira quarter, on the banks of the Tagus, is dedicated to Iria, a young nun whose cult is attested at Santarém since the Middle Ages. Rebuilt in 1668 in the Baroque style, it stands on the route of the Caminho Português, close to the Porta de Santiago through which pilgrims left the town. According to medieval tradition — not an established historical fact — Iria was murdered and thrown into the Tagus, her body miraculously reappearing downstream; only the medieval veneration of her cult is documented.
