A Gothic granite church raised on an earlier 13th-century structure, it became co-cathedral of the diocese of Coria-Cáceres in 1957. It stands in the heart of the Ciudad Monumental of Cáceres, a major stage on the Vía de la Plata, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. It houses the Cristo Negro, a 14th-century Gothic crucifix from a nearby convent and the object of great popular devotion.
