What stands there
listed as a National Monument in 1910, UNESCO World Heritage since 1983
Founded by order of King Manuel I on the site of a hermitage where navigators, including Vasco da Gama, came to pray before their departures, the monastery has become the symbolic starting point of the Caminho Portugues for many modern pilgrims setting out from Lisbon. A masterpiece of Manueline art, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, together with the Belem Tower. Its construction, spread over a century, blends late Gothic with the Renaissance.
