Catedral de Salamanca (Catedral Vieja y Catedral Nueva)

Salamanque

Dimensions
tower of the Catedral Nueva at 92 m; Romanesque cimborio (lantern tower) of the Vieja around 1150
Period
Catedral Vieja from the early 12th century to around 1236; Catedral Nueva from 1512/1513 to 1733
What stands there
two adjoining, interconnecting cathedrals; UNESCO city since 1988

A unique ensemble of two adjoining cathedrals, the Vieja (Romanesque-Gothic, 12th–13th century) and the Nueva (late Gothic with Renaissance and Baroque additions, 1512–1733), it bears witness to eight centuries of religious architecture in Salamanca. The building of the new cathedral took so long that it allowed the old one — normally destined to disappear — to be preserved, which explains the present narrowness of the Vieja's left aisle. The city, whose university is one of the oldest in Europe, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988 and is a key stage on the Vía de la Plata.
