What stands there
replaces an earlier cathedral destroyed in 1521 during the Revolt of the Comuneros
Nicknamed "the Lady of the Cathedrals", it is one of the last great Gothic cathedrals built in Europe, at a time when the Renaissance already dominated architecture on the Continent. Its construction, begun in 1525, stretched over more than two centuries before its official consecration in 1789. It stands on one of the historic routes of the Camino de Madrid, between the Sierra de Guadarrama and the province of Valladolid.
