Santa María la Real de Nieva

Dimensions
late Gothic cloister with Mudéjar elements
Period
Founded in the late 14th century (1392–1395), enlarged between 1414 and 1432
What stands there
the Cortes of Castile met here in 1473 under Henry IV

The monastery was founded in the late 14th century by Queen Catherine of Lancaster, following the discovery of a wooden statue of the Virgin in 1392; tradition relates that it had been hidden during the Muslim invasion, but according to historians it was more probably a chance rediscovery by a shepherd. Entrusted to the Dominicans from 1399, the building combines a Gothic still marked by the influence of Castilian Romanesque with Mudéjar elements in its remarkable cloister. It is a waymark on the Camino de Madrid between Segovia and Coca.
