Catedral de Sevilla (Santa María de la Sede)

Séville

Dimensions
the Giralda rises to 104 m, a former Almohad minaret of 82 m heightened in the 16th century
Period
Works begun, according to tradition, in 1401, symbolic completion in 1506
What stands there
largest Gothic cathedral in the world by floor area (116 x 76 m)

Built on the site of the great Almohad mosque, of which it retains the minaret, now the Giralda, and the Court of the Orange Trees, the Gothic cathedral was raised between the early 15th century and 1506. Historic starting point of the Vía de la Plata to Compostela, it remains a traditional gathering place for pilgrims before the great northern route. The chapter records of 1401 mention the wish to build "a work such and so good that there shall be none like it" — the more famous phrase, "a building so great that posterity will think us mad", is a later legendary rewording, not the original text.
