Iglesia de Santiago y San Juan Bautista
Madrid
A parish dedicated to Saint James is documented on this spot, near the present Plaza de Santiago, from the 12th century. The original Romanesque building was demolished in 1810 on the orders of Joseph Bonaparte and then rebuilt in neoclassical style between 1811 and 1817. It is today regarded by the confraternity of Saint James and the pilgrim associations as the traditional starting point of the Camino de Madrid — a tradition sustained by present-day pilgrim practice rather than by a status attested since the Middle Ages by precise historical sources.
