Basilique Notre-Dame-du-Roncier de Josselin

Josselin

Dimensions
Flamboyant Gothic building rebuilt from the 12th to the 16th century, restored in the 18th–20th centuries; raised to the rank of minor basilica
Period
Foundation legend dated to 808; the pardon of the Roncier (the Breton pilgrimage festival) celebrated every 8 September for several centuries
What stands there
The small sickle used in the discovery of the statue and the brambles on the gable are said to have withstood time, according to local tradition

According to tradition, in 808 a peasant discovered a statue of the Virgin in a bramble thicket on the banks of the Oust. Taken to his home, it vanished each night to reappear beneath the same brambles — a sign interpreted as the divine will that a chapel be built there. Verifiable fact: during the Revolution, revolutionaries tried to burn the statue; a fragment was saved from the flames and is still venerated in a reliquary within the present basilica.
