What stands there
a Romanesque nave predating even 1100, in a town otherwise dominated by the Rohans' castle

In the shadow of the mighty Rohan castle, the chapel of Sainte-Croix in Josselin preserves a Romanesque nave which the Monuments historiques record places in the second half of the 11th century, and thus before 1100 — one of the oldest architectural elements in the town. The building was altered in the 16th and 18th centuries, but the Romanesque core remains identifiable. The calvary associated with it completes this religious ensemble, standing apart from the great dynastic history of the Rohans that usually dominates the story of Josselin.
