What stands there
the Pedrón, dedicated to Neptune, is a documented archaeological fact

The present church, in Neoclassical style, dates from a reconstruction of 1859–1867, but the site has been occupied by a Christian place of worship since at least the 10th century, with a Romanesque church built in 1133 under the archbishop of Compostela Diego Gelmírez. Beneath its altar it houses the Pedrón, a genuine Roman votive altar of the 2nd century dedicated to Neptune — a documented archaeological fact. The Jacobean tradition according to which this stone served as a mooring for the boat that carried the body of Saint James from Palestine belongs, on the other hand, explicitly to medieval legend, not to established historical fact.
