What stands there
turned into a military barracks from 1707 until the 20th century

This former Romanesque-Gothic cathedral was built from 1203 on the site of the great mosque of Muslim Lleida, and consecrated in 1278. In 1707, at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, Philip V turned it into a military barracks, a use it kept for more than two centuries before its restoration in the 20th century. No longer used for worship since the building of a new cathedral in the 18th century, it still dominates the city from its hill, on the route of the Camino Catalán towards Aragon.
