Basilique Notre-Dame-du-Pilier de Saragosse

Saragosse

Dimensions
Vast Baroque basilica with eleven domes and four towers, on the banks of the Ebro
Period
Tradition of the apparition on the pillar placed in the year 40; Baroque building
What stands there
1 jasper column, the object of the cult

What is venerated here is not a statue but a support: the column — pilar — on which the Virgin is said to have appeared to the apostle James, according to a tradition that places the episode in the year 40. Co-cathedral of Zaragoza, the basilica is one of the most visited places in Spain, and devotion here is strong enough for Pilar to have become a common first name. The feast of 12 October gives rise to a whole week of festivities.
