Abbaye de Poblet
Vimbodí i Poblet
Dimensions
One of the vastest Cistercian ensembles in Europe; royal pantheon of Aragon
Period
Cistercian abbey; pantheon of the kings of Aragon from the reign of Peter the Ceremonious (14th century)
What stands there
The largest monastery in Europe still inhabited; World Heritage Site since 1991
Poblet is the perfect counter-example to the Cistercian abbey withdrawn from the world: from the 14th century and the reign of Peter the Ceremonious, it became the pantheon of the kings of Aragon, and its church houses their tombs. It is today the largest monastery in Europe still inhabited by a community. Declared a national monument after a visit by Alfonso XIII, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and received the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2005.
