Real Monestir de Sant Cugat del Vallès
Sant Cugat del Vallès
Since the early Middle Ages the site has housed the relics of Saint Cucuphas (Sant Cugat), a Christian martyr whose torment under Diocletian belongs to hagiographical tradition rather than documented history. The Benedictine community, attested from the 9th century, had one of the most remarkable Romanesque cloisters in Catalonia built in the 12th century, before the church was completed in the Gothic style. A stage on the Camino Catalán between Montserrat and Barcelona, the monastery also hosted the Catalan Corts convened by Alfonso the Magnanimous in 1419.
