ruins excavated and studied

Founded in the 12th century at the Somport pass, at 1,640 m above sea level, this pilgrims' hospital was reckoned by the medieval chronicles among the three greatest hospices in all Christendom, alongside those of the Great St Bernard and Jerusalem. Now in ruins, it marks the entry into Spain of the Way of Arles (Via Tolosana), the only one of the four routes in this Great Story to cross the Pyrenees by a pass other than Roncesvalles.
