Gebouwd op het graf van de martelaar de heilige Dionysius — die, volgens de legende, zijn afgehakte hoofd zou hebben opgeraapt en er, het in zijn handen dragend, enkele kilometers mee zou hebben afgelegd tot aan zijn begraafplaats — werd deze abdijkerk in de 12e eeuw volledig verbouwd door abt Suger, raadgever van de koningen Louis VI en Louis VII. Het koorhoofd, voltooid in 1144, luidt officieel de gotische kunst in: kruisribgewelven, steunbogen en royale glasramen verschijnen er voor het eerst samen. Als koninklijke necropolis van de Merovingers tot Louis XVIII herbergt de basiliek de rijkste Europese verzameling middeleeuwse grafbeeldhouwkunst. Op de plek waar de heilige volgens de Legenda Aurea begraven wilde worden, liet de heilige Genoveva vervolgens een kapel bouwen, de oorsprong van de huidige basiliek.
