Tradition has it that around 850, Spanish sailors caught in a storm implored the Virgin and saw a light guiding them towards this promontory; in thanksgiving they built an oratory there. The present sanctuary, enlarged over the centuries, has been a place of pilgrimage attested since the Middle Ages. In 1510, a young deaf-mute girl from Sospel is said to have recovered her hearing and speech there, a miracle reported by local tradition without independent historical confirmation.
