Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Coursegoules
Coursegoules
Dimensions
single nave of three bays, choir with a semi-domed apse
Period
Probably 12th century, over older burial vaults
What stands there
catacombs resembling tombs of the 8th–9th centuries
A Provençal Romanesque church built as the village was expanding, and several clues — underground burial vaults with features close to those of 8th- or 9th-century tombs — suggest that it rests on a far older building. Enlarged with two aisles in 1658, as confirmed by a pastoral visit by Bishop Antoine Godeau that same year, which describes it as "embellished and well whitewashed".
