Commanderie de Saint-Martin

Vence

Dimensions
Fragments of the former commandery (registered as a monument historique in 1927) incorporated into the grounds of a château rebuilt in 1900 and again in 1936 on the Templar foundations — today a five-star hotel.
Period
Commandery established in 1150. After 1312, passed to the Hospitallers. Château entirely rebuilt around 1900 and again in 1936 on the medieval foundations.
What stands there
fragments of the former commandery visible in the 14-hectare park; the street name, "avenue des Templiers", keeps the memory of the site alive

The estate at Vence, associated from the 4th century with Saint Martin of Tours, became in 1150 the fief of the Knights of the Temple, who set up a commandery there. After 1312, the site shared the common fate of Templar property in Provence and passed to the Hospitallers. It was entirely rebuilt at the turn of the 20th century by a Polish count and again in 1936, directly on the foundations of the former commandery, ruins of which remain visible in the park planted with three hundred olive trees several centuries old. The site is today a luxury hotel whose official address, 2490 avenue des Templiers, discreetly recalls the history of the place.
