around 600 paintings, some 1,400 engravings

A prehistoric sanctuary discovered in 1940, decorated with animal figures — horses, aurochs, deer — of exceptional artistic quality. Closed to the public as early as 1963 to preserve it, the original cave has since been replaced by a full-scale replica, Lascaux IV. Its ritual use, rather than any sign of habitation, makes it one of the oldest known sanctuaries of humankind.
