Labouheyre

Period
House where Félix Arnaudin died in 1921; today a cultural venue devoted to photography
What stands there
Reference collection of more than 3,200 glass plates and some 2,000 portraits, kept mainly at the Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux

In Arnaudin's sepia photographs, the shepherds on stilts and the Landes sheep still seem to move through the mist of a moorland that has now vanished.

Born and died at Labouheyre (1844–1921), Félix Arnaudin was the great ethnographer and photographer of the Grande Lande, which he roamed within a radius of some 70 km to record, before they vanished beneath the pine forest born of the law of 1857, the landscapes of moor and marsh, the shepherds on stilts, the rural trades and more than 2,000 faces on glass plates. He also collected tales, proverbs and songs in Gascon, making him a pioneer of regional folklore. The house where he died in 1921 has been turned into a space devoted to promoting and supporting photographic creation in Aquitaine.

Getting there : Open to the public, permanent and temporary exhibitions; run by the commune of Labouheyre. Coordinates correspond to the centre of the village, approximate for want of a verified precise address.
