Église Notre-Dame de Moustey

Moustey

Dimensions
Modest-sized Romanesque/Gothic building, dimensions not published
Period
13th–15th century
What stands there
1 church (deconsecrated)

This church, now deconsecrated and turned into a museum of religious heritage, stands only a few metres from the parish church of Saint-Martin, with which it once shared the same churchyard — an arrangement that earlier visitors considered exceptional. It was built about a century after Saint-Martin and served as the chapel of a pilgrims' hospital on the Tours route (Via Turonensis) of the Way of St James, a marker stone reminding travellers that 1,000 km remain to Compostela. Wall paintings of the 14th–15th century, discovered in 1985 and restored in 1989, depict a procession of figures at prayer as well as two scenes from Genesis (original sin, expulsion from Paradise). The building has been registered as a monument historique since 1973 (Mérimée record PA00083987).

Getting there : Open to the public as a museum of religious heritage, run by the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park
