Collégiale Saint-Pierre de Saint-Gaudens
Saint-Gaudens
A whole town bears the name of a young beheaded martyr, venerated here since the 5th century.
The collegiate church owes its origins to a religious community formed around 475 around the relics of a young martyr, Gaudens, beheaded according to tradition by the Visigoths, whose cult gave birth to the town that still bears his name. The 11th-century Romanesque building was altered in the 15th and 19th centuries, then completely restored between 2017 and 2019. Pope Clement V, a native of the region, authenticated the saint's relics by a bull and granted indulgences to the pilgrims who came to pray there. The collegiate church remains today the principal religious monument of Gascon Comminges.
Getting there : Listed as a monument historique (historic monument) in 1840; fully restored between 2017 and 2019; in the town centre of Saint-Gaudens
