Bastide de Montmaurin

Montmaurin

Dimensions
The town keeps the parish church of the Assomption; the texts describe neither market hall nor square with covered arcades. The site of the Castet, excavated in 2010, revealed a fortified complex of about six thousand square metres. Below, the villa of Lassalles, built around the middle of the 1st century and excavated from 1946, had two hundred rooms over nineteen hectares.
Period
End of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century (1317 according to the list of bastides); castrum of the Castet of the 12th-14th centuries.
What stands there
The caves of Montmaurin have been classified since 1949; the villa of Lassalles and the museum opened in 2020 are run by the Centre des monuments nationaux. The village numbered 192 inhabitants in 2022, against 570 in 1851.

Montmaurin, in the Comminges, some fifteen kilometres from Saint-Gaudens, is known above all for its Gallo-Roman villa of Lassalles and its prehistoric caves. The village itself nonetheless has a medieval origin as a new town: the Wikipedia page for the commune reports that this fief, within the Comminges sphere before 1270, was taken into the Foix castellany of Saint-Plancard in the last third of the 13th century, and that this lordship is at the origin of the creation of the bastide of Montmaurin. Wikipedia's list of bastides gives the date 1317. Above the gorges of the Seygouade, the fortified site of the Castet, or castrum of Roquebrune, goes back to the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century and disappears from the texts after 1343. The church of the Assomption is the parish church.
