Abbaye de Bonnefont-en-Comminges

Proupiary

Period
Founded in 1136
What stands there
4 counts of Comminges buried on the site

Stones from its cloister have travelled as far as The Cloisters in New York, a distant echo of medieval Comminges.

Founded in 1136 on land given by Flandrine de Montpezat and her sons, this Cistercian abbey, a daughter house of Morimond, played a major religious, economic and political role in medieval Comminges. Four counts of Comminges were buried there. Already in decline by the 14th century, it was sold as national property at the Revolution and then dismantled: the carved elements of its cloister were dispersed, some re-erected at Saint-Gaudens, others travelling as far as The Cloisters museum in New York. Substantial ruins survive today, gradually restored since the 1980s.

Getting there : Listed as a monument historique (historic monument) in 1984; restored by voluntary associations since the 1980s, open to visitors
