Église Saint-Michel-de-Rupe de Brentor

Brentor, Dartmoor

Dimensions
330 m above sea level, 12 m long
Period
Founded around 1130
What stands there
4th smallest complete church in England

Perched on the summit of an ancient volcano 350 million years old, this tiny church founded around 1130 by the Norman lord Robert Giffard owes its dizzying position to a legend: a rich merchant, caught in a storm off the coast of Devon, is said to have implored Saint Michael and vowed to build a church on the first land he sighted if he survived — Brent Tor, the summit most visible from the sea, was the providential choice. During restoration work in 1889-1890, forty skeletons were discovered beneath the floor of the building. Another notable point on John Michell's line.
