Tournus
Dimensions
aisled nave, transept — approximate position
Period
Consecrated in 1148, on an older parish site
What stands there
16th-century south chapel dedicated to the saint
Formerly known as "Sainte-Marie du Châtel", this church was originally the parish church of the Gallo-Roman castrum of Tournus, long before its official consecration by the bishop of Chalon in 1148. A chapel in the south transept arm, added in the 16th century, gives it its present name of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. Plundered by Protestant troops in 1562, then sold as national property at the Revolution and turned into a salt store, it narrowly escaped destruction before being saved and restored in the early 19th century.
