Cluny
Dimensions
abbey church, the largest in the Christian West before St Peter's in Rome
Period
Founded in 910, Romanesque church of the 11th–12th century
What stands there
once the seat of the largest monastic order in the medieval West
The beating heart of medieval monastic reform, Cluny stood at its height at the centre of Europe's largest network of abbeys, with some 1,450 affiliated monasteries across the Christian West. Its abbey church, today almost entirely destroyed after the Revolution, was for close to five centuries the largest religious building in Christendom, until the completion of St Peter's in Rome — a spiritual empire of which only a transept and a few towers remain, a fraction of its original, immense scale.
