Chapelle Notre-Dame de Garaison

Monléon-Magnoac

Dimensions
around 380 m above sea level
Period
Present chapel of the 16th century (1540), on the site of an earlier building raised after 1515
What stands there
3 apparitions reported in 1515

According to local tradition, the Virgin appeared three times in 1515 to a young shepherdess, Anglèze de Sagazan, asking that a chapel be built on this spot. A first chapel was raised near a spring, then replaced by the present building in 1540 as pilgrims flocked in. The apparition belongs to popular belief and has received no canonical recognition comparable to that of Lourdes; the chapel, listed as a monument historique (historic monument) in 1924, does however bear historical witness to the antiquity of Marian pilgrimage in the Magnoac.
