Bastide du Plan
Le Plan
Le Plan is a late bastide of the Comminges, five kilometres from Cazères, founded in 1366 in the middle of the Hundred Years' War to put the peasants out of harm's way. Wikipedia calls it an ecclesiastical bastide, the tourist office attributes it to Jean, count of Comminges. It has kept an uncommon face from it: one enters by the Porte Bâtie, contemporary with the foundation and marked with a date of 1648, and the church of Saint-Pierre, likewise built in 1366, raises a fortified front dominated by two square towers and a crenellated bell-gable of ashlar, inscribed as a monument historique in 1950. Several 16th-century timber-framed houses and the former market hall complete the old centre, which a chapel-oratory of the convent and a public weighbridge of 1881 accompany. The village, which numbered nearly 1,400 inhabitants in 1836, lay on a road to Santiago de Compostela and saw the pilgrims pass.
Getting there : Free access to the town through the Porte Bâtie and to the surroundings of the church. No tourist office or market documented on the spot.
