Bastide de Buzet-sur-Tarn
Buzet-sur-Tarn
Buzet-sur-Tarn guards the crossing of the Tarn between the Albigeois and the Toulousain. A first village is said to have been founded there in 814 and then rebuilt in the 11th century, when the cartulary of Saint-Sernin mentions the building of a bridge over the river. After the Treaty of Meaux of 1229, which put an end to the Albigensian Crusade, the Count of Toulouse Raimond VII chose to build a village protected by an enclosure in order to control this bridge: the land was bought in 1235 from Pilfort de Rabastens and a charter of customs granted to the inhabitants on 1 July 1240. The bastide keeps its fortified church of Saint-Martin, inscribed in 1926, with an octagonal bell-tower twenty-three metres high crowned with machicolations. The château de Buzet was in 1473 the prison of Jeanne de Foix, widow of Jean V of Armagnac, killed at Lectoure on 6 March of that year, whose captivity fed a dark legend.
