Lisle-sur-Tarn
Lisle-sur-Tarn
On the bank of the Tarn, between Gaillac and Rabastens, Lisle was born of the peace of 1229: the ramparts of the fortified village of Montaigut having been dismantled after the Albigensian Crusade, its inhabitants settled near a hermitage and the castle of Belbézé, and the count of Toulouse authorised a new town, surrounded by walls and ditches, which its inhabitants named La Yla, the island. Four consuls elected each year, a landing stage, mills, a toll, fairs and markets: the privileges made the fortune of a wine port that shipped its branded casks as far as Bordeaux. The plan has remained intact, four quarters of streets at right angles once closed by four gates around a square with covered arcades of 4,425 m², one of the largest of the bastides of the South-West, where the Griffoul fountain of the 13th century held pride of place, back now from Albi.
