Château de Monbazillac
Monbazillac
The château de Monbazillac overlooks the vineyard of the same name, south of Bergerac. Charles d'Aydie had it built in a single campaign around 1550 — the monument historique record, for its part, dates it to the second half of the 15th century — which gives it a rare unity: a rectangular residential range with four round towers at the corners, girdled with moats, in which the machicolations, the battlements and the wall-walk are hardly more than traditional decoration on a house of pleasure. It passed from the Aydie family to the Bouchard d'Aubeterre in 1607, then to the Barraud, the Luxe de Capian and the Bacalan families. Listed as a monument historique (classified) on 20 February 1941, it has belonged since 1960 to the cooperative wine cellar of Monbazillac, which has made a museum of it. It keeps a chestnut roof frame of the 15th century and panelling of the 16th.
