Chapelle de Locmaria (Rostrenen)
Rostrenen
Set apart from the town of Rostrenen, the chapel of Locmaria surprises by one architectural detail: it has no bell tower, a rarity in central Brittany where a bell-gable or a tower is almost systematic. The present building, rebuilt in the 15th century after the destruction of the War of the Breton Succession, nevertheless reuses 14th-century window tracery in its nave, proof of an earlier sanctuary on the same site. An 18th-century portico, adorned with a carved dove of the Holy Spirit, completes the ensemble; its original spire, raised in 1720, collapsed in 1877, and a sacristy was added in the 19th century. But the true vitality of the place lies in its pardon, the Breton pilgrimage festival celebrated every year on Trinity Sunday in honour of Itron Varia Gaoudin, Notre-Dame de Liesse — Our Lady of Joy. The ceremony still gathers a faithful community around an open-air Mass followed by a procession, a bonfire (tantad) and the singing of the Magnificat in Breton. It is the volunteers of the association "Les Amis de Locmaria" who maintain the building and keep the tradition alive, not without reminding us that "whoever loses their culture risks losing their soul" — a message that neatly sums up the attachment of the people of Rostrenen to this little rural sanctuary.
