Gorges et chaos du Corong

Locarn

In the forêt de Duault, near Locarn, the Follezou stream crosses a chaos of granite blocks covered with mosses and ferns, beneath beeches, oaks and pines. Some blocks seem precariously balanced, others form small caves, and the stream disappears beneath the rocks before springing out again a few metres lower down as a cascade. Geologists rank it among the finest granite chaos areas in Brittany. Legend makes it the work of a giant named Boudédé: walking along the stream, he is said to have emptied the pebbles from his clogs, and the heap of rocks was born where they fell. The Chouans, it is reported, hid in these blocks. Very close by, the forest also shelters megaliths: the menhirs of the Jumeaux de Kerroux, the dolmens of Gouaremou and the Dent de Saint-Gervais. The site is classed as a natural zone of ecological interest and a Natura 2000 zone, and largely belongs to the département. Otters live there and can sometimes be seen at night.

Getting there: In the forêt de Duault, near Locarn (communes of Locarn and Saint-Servais). From Locarn, take the D20 towards Saint-Nicodème; after 6 km, turn left towards Corong, then left again after 2 km; car park 600 m further, then descend on foot. Easy waymarked path of about 1 h 30. Free visit. The coordinates published by tourist sites differ by several kilometres; those on the map are calculated from the perimeter in the official geological record.
