Some thirty Trappist monks: prayer, craft work and lectio divina

Founded in the mid-19th century by Dom Joseph Hercelin, who wished to establish a monastery in his home diocese, the abbey of Timadeuc welcomed three religious from the abbey of La Trappe as early as 1842; it was raised to an abbey by papal rescript in 1847. Victim of an arson attack in 1863, it was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style at the end of the century, then given its definitive monastery between 1925 and 1930. Some thirty Trappist monks live there today under the strict Cistercian rule, paced by prayer, craft work and lectio divina. Today it draws most of its income from the maturing of cheeses – the Trappe de Timadeuc and the Timanoix – and from making fruit jellies from its orchard.
