Château de Puilaurens
Lapradelle-Puilaurens
Dimensions
697 m above sea level
Period
10th – 13th century
What stands there
double curtain wall, 4 corner towers
Perched on Mont Ardu and never taken by storm, it served as a refuge for the Cathars before becoming the largest garrison on the whole royal frontier under Louis IX. Local legend, well attested in the oral tradition of the area, links the west tower — the tallest in the castle, known as the "Tower of the White Lady" — to the ghost of Blanche de Bourbon, great-niece of Philip the Fair, who is said to have stopped here in 1353 while fleeing her husband, Peter the Cruel, King of Castile.
