Roches Tremblantes (Fauteuil du Diable)

Rennes-les-Bains

Dimensions
granite blocks on the hillside facing Rennes-les-Bains, alt. 375-458 m
Period
Natural geological formation; identification as a "cromlech" proposed in 1886 by the abbé Henri Boudet, never validated by professional archaeology
What stands there
1 group of rocks, one of which bears a carved inscription "PAX"

These very real granite rocks, one of which bears the inscription "PAX", owe their reputation as a megalithic "cromlech" and as "rocking stones" that can be set trembling at will to an 1886 work by the abbé Henri Boudet, parish priest of Rennes-les-Bains and founder of the modern mythology that has grown up around the region — a theory never validated by professional archaeology, and to be treated explicitly as an unverified modern legend, distinct from the geological reality of the blocks themselves.
