这座罗曼式教堂早在1092年就有记载，是阿尔比十字军东征第一场大屠杀的现场：1209年7月22日，圣抹大拉的马利亚瞻礼日，西蒙·德·蒙福尔（Simon de Montfort）的军队洗劫了贝济耶（Béziers），杀戮了一部分居民——男人、女人和孩子——他们躲进这座教堂，以为可以在那里得到庇护。据说就是在这一次，教宗的特使说出了那句至今臭名昭著的话：“把他们统统杀光，天主自会认出属于他的人。”1999年，教堂修复成了最初罗曼式的朴素面貌，不过建筑上仍留有当日十字军纵火的若干创痕。
