这座修道院教堂建在殉道者圣德尼（Denis）的墓上——据传说，他捡起自己被砍下的头颅，捧在手中走了数公里，一直走到他的安葬之地——12世纪由絮热（Suger）院长全面改建，他是国王路易六世和路易七世的顾问。其后殿于1144年竣工，正式开启了哥特艺术：肋拱拱顶、飞扶壁和宽阔的彩绘玻璃窗在这里第一次汇集一处。从墨洛温王朝直到路易十八，它都是王室陵寝，收藏着欧洲最丰富的中世纪墓葬雕塑。按照《黄金传说》的说法，在圣人希望被安葬的地方，圣热纳维耶芙（Geneviève）后来建起了一座礼拜堂，成为今日大殿的前身。
