Construida sobre la tumba del mártir san Dionisio —quien, según la leyenda, habría recogido su cabeza cortada y recorrido varios kilómetros llevándola en las manos hasta el lugar de su sepultura—, esta iglesia abacial fue enteramente remodelada en el siglo XII por el abad Suger, consejero de los reyes Luis VI y Luis VII. Su cabecera, terminada en 1144, inaugura oficialmente el arte gótico: bóvedas de crucería, arbotantes y generosos ventanales aparecen aquí reunidos por primera vez. Necrópolis real desde los merovingios hasta Luis XVIII, alberga la colección más rica de Europa de escultura funeraria medieval. En el lugar donde, según la Leyenda dorada, el santo deseaba ser enterrado, santa Genoveva mandó construir después una capilla, origen de la basílica actual.
