What stands there
3 returns of the statue to its original spot

According to tradition, a team of oxen unearthed, not far from Limoux, a statue of a Black Madonna. Taken home by a peasant, it is said to have mysteriously left and returned, three times over, to the spot where it was found — a sign interpreted as God's wish to see a sanctuary built there. A place of Marian worship is attested as early as 1011; the present building, begun in the early 14th century and completed in 1488, is today a minor basilica. The legend of the travelling statue remains, as is often the case, impossible to verify historically.
