Sanctuaire Notre-Dame de Lourdes
Lourdes
Between February and July 1858, the young Bernadette Soubirous said she saw the Virgin eighteen times in the Massabielle grotto. These apparitions, recognized by the Catholic Church in 1862, made Lourdes one of the largest Marian shrines in the world, with several basilicas subsequently built. The authenticity of the visions is a matter of faith and beyond any historical proof; only the verifiable facts are established: Bernadette's biography, the construction of the buildings, and the well-documented scale of the resulting pilgrimage.
